There are various types of destinations that can be chosen, each with different characteristics. From the big cities of New York or Tokyo to the ecotourist destinations of Kenya and Costa Rica. A traveller usually seeks one of three things from their vacation; relaxation, adventure, or culture. Although you can experience all three in one location, there is usually a predominant theme in your vacation.
In choosing a vacation to relax, many opt for a natural setting. Sundrenched beaches are usually the prefferred type of location.
For those that are not comfortable with travelling to other countries, Hawaii is the ideal destination. The four main islands are Oahu, Mauai, Hawaii, and Kauai. If you are willing to travel to other countries, but prefer to be in an English speaking setting, you could choose the Caymans in the Carribean or Belize, formerly British Honduras, in Central America. For the experienced traveller, Bali and Fiji are wonderful destinations.
There are a number of places that offer great adventures, such as river rafting in Costa Rica, Safaris in Africa, and Scuba Diving at Austrailia's Great Barrier Reef. However, there are always local alternatives to these grand adventures. The western Sierra's offer great river rafting tours, while Yellowstone has year-round safaris. Scubadiving in Belize is a great alternative destination that features the largest reef in North America.
Travelling to historical sights or to locations that offer the theater and the arts is yet another way to see the world. Within the United States there are plenty of places with historic significance. There is nothing like being in front of the Lincoln Memorial in the National Mall or seeing the latest Broadway play in New York. The Louvre in Paris have so many great works of art located in one location, while looking at Florence from Michelangelo Park at suset is an unbelievable sight.
