What to Take
The one thing I would recommend is to find a way to pack to maximize your vacation time. Pack so that you spend as much time as possible enjoying your vacation and not packing, picking up checked baggage, or doing laundry. Is it worth losing 2 hours doing laundry yourself or 1 hour waiting for checked baggage?
Many new to travelling make the mistake of overpacking. Although this seems like a good idea, it can be quite an inconvenience. If you are going to travel for a week or less, all you really need is one carry-on suitcase and one carry-on small bag or purse. The carry-on luggage is usually limited to 45 linear inches, where the width + height + length is equal to or is less than 45 inches. The weight for these carry-ons should also be less than 40lbs. Ladies should remember that purses can be almost any size, and men should take a small backpack. You will get hassled if you decide to overfill the purse or backpack.
I know what many of you may be thinking at this point. How can I pack carry-on only with the tough TSA requirements? Just follow their guidelines and you are clear.
TSA allows travel-sized toiletries and medicines which must be 3 ounces or less and fit comfortably in a 1-quart, clear plastic, zip-top bag. The name on prescription medicine must match the passenger's ticket. Nonprescription liquids, such as saline solution and eye care products, are allowed as long as they do not exceed 4 ounces. Travelers can also bring beverages and other items on board if purchased in the secure boarding area. For updated check the TSA website.
If you pack what you need only you will be set. If you need laundry done, pay to have hotel take care of it. It is worth the time savings. If you need an extra sweater, because the weater has become uncharacteristically cold, buy a souvenir sweater. Many by souvenir items of clothing anyways, might as well use it while in you vacation destination.
